Jean Valjean tries to steal a bread so he can eat and is caught and sentenced to five years in prison. Trying to escape, he is caught and ends up with 19 years of hard labor. After serving his sentence, the man is left wondering the towns in search of a shelter and a job. He ends up in the house of Bishop Myriel and after a hot meal and a warm bed, Jean robs him and steals all his silverware. When caught and confronted, Monseigneur Myriel covers for him and Jean decides to change his ways and dedicate his life to kindness.
