The story starts with the death of Queen Bellatrix, which prompts the leaders of the most influential families in the land to get together and vote for someone to take the lead. However, it would appear that the queen did not die of natural causes, and her successor is investigated on the matter. Thus, someone else must take the lead in the meantime, which is where the main character, Odell, comes into play.
