Does the world really need another racing video game? Codemasters seems to think so. With TOCA Race Driver 2: Ultimate Racing Simulator, its newly renamed sequel due to hit Xbox and PC in a few months, those whacky Brits are looking to bring something a little new to the table. Move over Gran Turismo 4. Step aside Project Gotham Racing 2. TOCA Race Driver 2 could well be the first racing title ever to offer 15 different styles of racing action in one package. Yep, that's right. 15 styles, baby. So what do you get? While Sony's excellent and revered Gran Turismo titles are well known for presenting the player with myriad different and perfectly-rendered car models, TOCA Race Driver 2 wants to be king of hill when it comes to sheer gameplay variety. And that's not to say that TOCA's cars and trucks don't look fabulous in their own right. On a recent demo of TOCA Race Driver 2 up in Los Angeles, I got some hands-on playtime with a near-final beta build of the game. I've always been a bit of a racing game fan, and I have to admit that the TOCA series has never really appeared on my personal gaming radar in the past -- but now it's got its own special flashing bulb. The most exciting part revealed during the demo was the fact that players of TOCA Race Driver 2 will be able to race rally cars, super trucks, off-road 4x4s, Formula One, Formula Ford, street cars, and much more ... all in one game. With over 50 individual courses, ranging from real-life circuits such as Brands Hatch in the U.K., to Italian, German, American and Spanish courses, TOCA Race Driver 2 really presents a monster challenge. Not only can you compete in ice races, rally-cross, and pure timed rally races, but you'll also get to steam around circuits in huge, shiny super trucks -- minus those awkward trailer payloads -- as well as some of the most hardcore, brutal off-road 4x4s I've ever seen. Couple all these racing types together with a great physics engine, a slick graphics engine -- which rarely falters below 60 frames-per-second -- and decent controls, and things start to look rather promising for TOCA Race Driver 2.
