is a version of the authentic Chinese mahjong game played against 3 computer opponents. First published as a DOS game by Electronic Arts in 1992, Hong Kong Mahjong is now available as a new full-featured Windows program. Mahjong is played with rectangular tiles instead of a deck of cards. The object of the game is to arrange the tiles into "sets" (Chow, Pong, and Kong). Each player starts off with 13 tiles. With each turn you can pick up a 14th tile, and then discard one from your hand. If you are the first player to collect 4 "sets" of 3 tiles plus a single pair of tiles, you win the hand. The types of tiles you've collected determine how many chips the other players have to pay you.
Though the element of luck is great, the long-term winnings go to the player who pays attention and makes good choices on what to keep and what to throw. You must balance your desire to put together a high-paying hand with the need to "go out" (win) before the other players.
Hong Kong Mahjong lets you customize the game with a variety of options including minimum hand (0, 1, 2, 3), false declaration penalty, blind discards, and thrower pays for all. It features 12 computer opponents of varying skill levels to choose from, 2 tile sets (antique or modern), 16 background images, and music.
The demo program is available in 800x600 or 1024x768 resolution. The full version is also available in 1280x1024 resolution.
