is a space combat simulation that is the sequel to Descent: FreeSpace - The Great War, featuring heart-pounding dogfights and spectacular visual effects. FreeSpace 2 continues in the year 2367, 32 years after the Great War, where the imposing forces of the Shivans have surfaced again, threatening the survival of the Terrans and the Vasudans. In this post-war era, rebellion and civil war jeopardize the security of the colonies and the future of both the Terrans and Vasudans. While the rebellion rages on in the remote areas of Terran space, you serve as part of the Galactic Terran Vasudan Alliance (GTVA), monitoring and intervening in the interstellar skirmish.
FreeSpace 2 offers squadrons of bombers and fighters equipped with an array of advanced weaponry for use in frenzied dogfights, as well as massive ships and destroyers to engage in combat. An intuitive in-game messaging system lets you command intelligent squad-mates, redirect wingmen and request reinforcements.
Immersive nebula effects introduce significant new gameplay elements into the space combat genre. When entering a nebula, your ships are susceptible to such hazards as lightning effects that cause damage to your ship's hull, and electromagnetic effects that hamper the craft’s sensors. Nebulas also contribute to the element of surprise by providing a hiding place for you and opponents alike.
The key features of the demo include: stunning realtime in-nebula missions with sensor interference and electrical storms, fantastic capital ship battles (including the new beam weapons and anti-fighter flak cannons), 12 new ship classes (including the Corvette-class capital ships), 2 single-player missions plus one training mission, 2 multiplayer missions including the new 12-player Dogfight mode, and more. You can also challenge other FreeSpace 2 pilots on Parallax Online (PXO), a free Internet-based multiplayer matching service featuring chatrooms, game lists, Squad War matches, statistics, and pilot rankings.
